Also, for the history geeks: isn’t it awesome that we have the Phrygian cap on our Army seal? I never knew that (it’s the one over the centermost pike, the hat that resembles David the Gnome’s).

In current-day America, the cap doesn’t mean what it was supposed to mean. But I’ll be interested to see whether it’ll come back into style during the war crimes tribunal fevers of our future.

So I went to this n+1 thing last night, The Internet: We All Live There Now. Pretty good discussion, but unfortunately it was mostly the literary academic community licking their wounds at even having to address the internet.

Moe Tkacik had the most relevant and interesting things to say, unfortunately she said ‘like’ so many times it was really hard to tell. She captivated the audience with her sloth and rightly called out that they mostly only included her as the “specimen of inquiry”. Unfortunately, though just as effective, casual language still doesn’t sound nearly as convincing as Harvard syntax.

I was surprised that we were among the few to laugh when it was implied that Keith Gesson is a womanizer.

Earlier today The Times seemed to imply, through a hard-to-miss ad placed under the “Most Emailed” list, that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was featured in some kind of shouty talking head match involving webcams and headsets with what appeared to be Tucker Carlson Lite.

And yet, after that poignant, promising snapshot of online rancor, there is no streaming Zuckerberg to be found. Instead we get Chris Hayes of The Nation, which is fine and all, but I’d like to see how Hayes would have argued had he a cool theoretical two billion dollars on his side of things.

I have a few theories of my own:

1) The Times thinks that all young men who work on these there computers look pretty much the same.

2) The Times, hoping to score big on Zuckerberg’s web-2.0-famous mug, substituted the first shot to get all of our hot, hot clicking action. There are at least 20 of us that would have recognized him, which is more than would usually watch two guys who somehow manage to look younger than me though I just got carded for cigarettes talk to each other about politics via webcam.

3) The first picture is not Mark Zuckerberg. There is no Mark Zuckerberg.

4) Facebook is buying The Times, and Maureen Dowd and Paul Krugman will be added to my Oregon Trail wagon, just like I always dreamed in my favorite pioneer dreams.

“America’s most widely syndicated op-ed columnist” and Fox News blowhard Cal Thomas, in a post that’s been scrapped but was picked up first by Slate, referred to the above move as Michelle Obama’s “‘Hezbollah’ style fist-jabbing.”

This all came about, he wrote, because she “is not as ‘refined’ as Obama at hiding her TRUE feelings about America—etc.”

I’m not a huge fan of the word featured above, unless one is in Scotland, where one is advised to use it fast and frequently, and as a friendly greeting in pubs.

However, in this case, and in the case of Hillary Clinton’s destructive, party-fucking flip-flopping today, I think it serves well its dual function as both an anatomically correct descriptive and as an ugly pejorative that should only be lobbed at bitches who really fucking deserve it.
